Love & Grapes, 'Nobis', Rhône Valley, France, 2023
Do you want a glass of red wine and then another glass of that because it is cold and dark out? Do you want it to have freshness and also depth? Do you understand vibrancy and purity? Do you want to have it with a spicy fried chicken sandwich and not hate your life because the tannins and alcohol are not fighting the heat? Do you know what Syrah is because you are a normal person and so won’t be scared of it on a menu? Do you want a juicy, fruit-driven red that we can still put on our natural wine list and not feel like we are compromising our values and cool factor? Do you want to have some brisket with it? (Yeah!) Maybe something with chocolate? Do you want to just drink it by itself and talk about your problems and the shopping you just did on 4th? And then post it for all of your friends and they will think ‘wow, that bottle is so hype that person must be so cool?” Do you then want to buy a bottle from the shelf and take it home for your stupid Kitsilano charcuterie party? Do you want to look at this cute label? Do you know what ‘glou-glou’ means? It means easy to drink. Do you know that that is what brunch is about?
Domaine de L’Ecu is one of the Loire Valleys’ coolest biodynamic producers, one of the first to practice organic viticulture (40 years now). They are best known for their Muscadet and winemaker Fred Niger’s larger than life personality and commitment to doing things by hand and respecting the land. They now also produce wines from different regions across France, buying grapes from respected organic growers. HENCE the ‘Love & Grapes’ project. ‘Nobis’ is sourced from a small two hectare vineyard near the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape in France’s Rhône Valley. Grapes were fermented and aged in 10 months in stainless steel to integrate fresh fruit flavours. Juicy and peppery. Velvety dark fruit, florals (violets), faint cured meat. Medium acidity, silky tannins, chalky minerality.
